Pin: 11 x 74 mm

After three and a half years of making rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets and brooches I decided that it was time to make something else. Something less everyday but still functional. I firmly believe that jewellery should be as functional as it is pretty. After some thought I settled on hair adornments as my new project.

Hair adornments is a diverse category since you can wear pins, combs, barrettes or pretty much anything that can be secured in place. I decided to make a hair barrette because a metal barrette isn’t something that you see every day.

It was great fun designing numerous barrettes, some of which you can see in the images to the left. In the end I made only two of the designs. First I made the brass tree barrette that you see. I think I will always choose tree designs over any other since trees and leaves are my favourite themes. After this one I made a small lotus flower barrette in silver. When both were done, the novelty of making hair adornments was over and I never got around to making more of the designs that I scribbled down. Perhaps one day…

This barrette was pierced from a thick sheet of brass. The pin was made from a thick brass rod that I rolled flat and shaped at the ends. The polished finish assures that this hair adornment will catch the light and attract eyes whenever it is worn.
