Electroplated nickel silver

Roughly 20 cm in height

These lovely herb markers were made as a birthday gift for a friend’s mother. She wanted to give her mother herb markers and asked if I could stamp herb names onto silver teaspoons for her. We went hunting through secondhand shops for interesting old teaspoons but when I saw these large serving spoons I knew that they were perfect for the job! Her mother has a massive herb garden and teaspoons would simply disappear in that jungle of leaves.

We bought all the serving spoons and forks we could find, and she gave me a list of Afrikaans herb names to stamp onto them. I must say I learned a bit about my home language while working on this project. (Do you know what a smeerwortel is?) As soon as I started work on the project I realised that the spoons were so big that a single word stamped onto them would be swallowed by the spoon. My jewellery teacher gave me the brilliant idea to add a little picture to each spoon.

Herb names were stamped onto these spoons and swirly leaf-like designs were engraved with a small handheld electric engraver. The spoons were oxidised and polished again to add a dark finish to the detail on the silver spoons.
