Sterling silver and iolite

32 x 12 mm

These earrings are one of my favourite designs so far. It was a 21st birthday gift for my sister-in-law. She has dark hair, a fair skin and sky blue eyes and I thought that this design will look beautiful on her (which it does).

I wanted to make earrings for her, with small iolite cabochons as studs and with something silver dangling from the studs. Most of the designs that I scribbled down were scrolls and swirls, feathers and damask patterns. In the end I settled on a damask pattern and used a piece of a pattern that I found on the internet (this pattern is shown in the photos to the left). The earrings came out so pretty that I would like to make more of them when I find the time for it.

The damask patterns were saw pierced from sterling silver plate. The iolite stones are set in open-backed settings to allow more light into the stones. Iolite is one of those interesting stones that have more than one colour attributed to it. It is dichromatic and appears deep blue-purple or colourless depending on how the light falls on it.
