Sterling silver and labradorite

34 x 18 mm

This small pendant was the first gemstone piece I ever made. It is still one of my favourite pieces, since my great love for and fascination with gemstones began when I started work on this project. When I began jewellery classes, my friend bought me a handful of cabochon and faceted stones as a birthday present and those stones kick started my intrigue about the beauty and wonder of gemstones. This labradorite cab was among those stones.

I was extremely excited to start with this project and envisioned myself making great heaps of gemstone encrusted jewellery in the future. However, it is no simple task to make a bezel that fits exactly around your stone, and I found it even more challenging to set the stone, once everything was constructed. So this project was not only the beginning of grand things to come, but it also taught me that all good things takes time and that part of the reason why jewellery is so valuable, is because it takes so much skill and time to create.

The pendant is made from silver plate, with details cut out by saw piercing. The stone is a very light and translucent labradorite cabochon. The delicate look of the labradorite creates a nice contrast with the rough finish of the pendant.
