Sterling silver and Akoya pearl

Ring: 29 x 21 mm
Pearl: 8 mm diameter

This ring was a farewell gift to my sister when she left South Africa to become an English teacher in South Korea. The ring is probably too big to be worn every day but it is something special that she can wear whenever she feels homesick.

For this project I focussed my design around the pearl. I wanted something to harbour the pearl without covering too much of it.  Since pearls are very soft you always need a protective setting. I decided to make a lotus flower and use the inner leaves to hold and protect the pearl. I think it worked out beautifully, so much so that I wouldn’t mind making another ring like this one, maybe with a different colour pearl. I usually do not make two of the same pieces since it is boring to repeat work without learning new skills, but I will make an exception here.

The lotus flower was pierced from two thin sterling silver plates, which were domed slightly before being soldered together. The flower was soldered onto a thin round wire ring and the pearl was glued onto a small pin in the centre of the flower.
